Heads up, all you Second Amendment wonks! Briefing is now under way in District of Columbia v. Heller.

District of Columbia’s Merit Brief (pdf, 79 pages)

Joint Appendix (pdf, 93 pages)

H/T to SCOTUSblog.

This is, of course, only the beginning. The folks who prevailed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit get to file a brief of their own, and the District then gets to file a reply brief. There’ll undoubtedly be numerous friend-of-the-court (amicus curiae) briefs filed on behalf of state and local governments, advocacy organizations and others. Stay tuned!

Update:

BLT reports that Walter Dellinger, an acting U.S. Solicitor General during the Clinton administration and currently the top dog in the appellate practice department of a hoity toity D.C. law firm, will argue the District’s case on a pro bono basis.
