Savior status ain’t what it used to be.

Last summer Fred Thompson was the savior of the GOP. Yesterday his presidential campaign went gentle into that good night when Thompson made the long-inevitable announcement that he’s withdrawing from the race.

Being the savior of a political party is a tall order by any measure. Thompson was too insane and dogmatic for some within the Republican fold, and not nearly insane and dogmatic enough for others.

Contrast that with savior-of-mankind status, which appears laughably simple by comparison. Jesus has otherwise reasonable people believing in shit like a 6,000-year-old universe, talking donkeys, the U.S. as God’s chosen nation, and sending massive armies great distances to butcher people holding divergent beliefs.  Poor ol’ Fred couldn’t so much as win one lousy party primary.
