Joe the Plumber: Making Obama Look Very Good

Ass-Grabbing Mental Patient

I'm John McCain, mental patient, and I approve this booty.

Anyone who watched last night’s presidential debate quickly heard more than enough references to “Joe the plumber.”

I know that McCain is displeased to the point of desperation over his recent showings in the polls and is scrambling for something, anything, to turn the trend around. Desperation apparently makes you stupid, because using Joe the plumber as the centerpiece of a debate strategy was as dirt-dumb a move as I’ve ever seen.

I had never heard of Joe the plumber before last night’s debate. With the candidates focusing vast amounts of time on him, I said “Who the fuck is Joe the plumber?” My sweetie said she’d tell me all about it after the debate.

Turns out that Joe the plumber is Joe Wurzelbacher of Ohio. Mr. Wurzelbacher showed up at an Obama campaign event in Toledo, Ohio a few days back. He talked with Obama outside the event venue about how he’s been a plumber for some fifteen years and is ready to buy a plumbing business that grosses a little over $250,000. The point of the encounter, of course, was showing that Obama’s tax plan would impose “higher taxes” on Joe for wanting his piece of the American dream.

Anyone who was the least bit curious about Joe the plumber could have found video of the encounter on youtube. Obama spoke with Joe politelty and in great detail for over five minutes. Check it out. I think you’ll agree that Obama did a superb job of addressing the guy’s concerns. Obama pointed out that that only the money earned above $250,000 would be subject to the higher tax rate. Toward the end Obama pointed out his proposed capital gains tax cut and noted that if Joe built his company to a $500,000-per-year business, he’d probably end up paying less in taxes under Obama’s plan than under McCain’s.

It was truly superb work on Obama’s part. Really. See for yourself.

Mr. Wurzelbacher had a “gotcha” look about him throughout the encounter, so it was pretty apparent that something was up. Sure enough, soon after the encounter Mr. Wurzelbacher was on the phone with Neil Cavuto of F[ederal]O[ffice of]X[enophobia] News blabbering about socialism and Robin Hood.

The last time I looked, some poll showed that 30% or so of respondents thought they were in the top 1% of income earners. In my own experience, many who know they aren’t in the top 1% think they will be within the couple of years or so.

And then there’s always a core group of dumbasses who don’t understand the marginal rate system we use to tax income. Those idiots are convinced that there comes a point when making more money actually means making less because tax increases outstrip income gains.

These, along with the VARR (violent, angry, racist retard) community, are the fools that McCain, Fox News and obvious shills like Joe the plumber are playing to. It’s all they’ve got left.

The sad part is, it may be enough.

Update:

Q – What is Joe the Plumber NOT?

A – A plumber.

More:

Q – Who would get a tax break under the Obama plan?

A – Joe the Non-Plumber

More Still:

Folks were reporting earlier today that Joe the Non-Plumber isn’t even registered to vote. That’s incorrect. Joe’s first name isn’t really Joe; it’s Samuel (Joseph is his middle name). He is in fact registered to vote in Lucas County, Ohio (my old stompin’ grounds) as a Republican. Trouble is, his last name is misspelled “Worzelbacher” on the county Board of Elections rolls. Irony of ironies, that’s exactly the sort of thing that the GOP uses to get voters disqualified at the polls.

And Again:

Samuel the Non-Plumber really does hate taxes, so much so that he’s delinquent on his Ohio income tax obligations to the tune of $1,182.98. The state filed an income tax lien against him in 2007.

I Can’t Stop Myself (10/18/08):

Walnuts has taken leave of his senses. Apparently he’s telling people publicly, with cameras running and reports present, that Samuel the Non-Plumber is “is what small business people all over this country are all about.” Did McCain miss the part about Samuel not actually being a small businessman?

It Never Gets Any Less Idiotic (10/24/08): Samuel the Non-Plumber told idiot right wing shrieker Laura Ingraham that he’s considering a run for Congress. If ever there was a bulletproof member of Congress, it’s Rep. Marcy Kaptur. But by all means, “Joe,” give it a try. After all, latching firmly onto the public teat is what anti-socialist free marketeers are all about.

You are so blinded by your own stupidity. Lets recap: We can’t talk about ACORN, AYERS,ALYNSKY, ODINGA, MICHELLE, RACE, JOE THE PLUMBER, JESSE JACKSON ,MURTHA AND SO ON AND SO ON…. We can just tape record Obama from day one. We no nothing more about him then when he started… Thats a real democracy…. NOT

  • genghishitler  On October 16, 2008 at 12:38 pm

    Lets recap: We can’t talk about . . .

Not so, kaz. We can talk about whatever you’d like. We can even talk about relevant topics.

  • Stephen  On October 16, 2008 at 12:54 pm

Whoever wrote this article above is a complete dumbass.
He does not understand that “dumb plumbers” like Joe dream of owning their own business one day, and it is that dream that , when fulfilled, creates jobs for other people, who then hopefully go on to dreams of their own.
Not everyone like you dreams of being on welfare, sucking up money from the “rich”, and if they do, they will not be creating any jobs or stimulating this economy.
There is nothing progressive about the “marginal” tax rate, and we do understand it, dumbass!
And Obama.. he has changed positions on every damn thing since he started running, even reneging on his friends Ayers, “Reverend” Wright etc… But that is his core constituancy, and will be again if and when he takes office.
He doesn’t give a sh** about Joe the plumber or any other plumber. He cares about a governemnt-run everything.. funny enough, the only well-functioning government entity today, the Military, he despises.
You really think someone’s associations over the years are not relevant?? People he knew closely? Reverends whose speeches he didn’t hear for 20 years??
what planet are you from? don’t answer, I know…

  • genghishitler  On October 16, 2008 at 1:05 pm

There is nothing progressive about the “marginal” tax rate, and we do understand it, dumbass!

Who’s “we”, Stephen? Lumping together the distinct concepts of progressive rates and marginal rates bespeaks a total LACK of understanding. The “we” who you claim share your obviously inaccurate understanding might be a little peeved.

  • Stephen  On October 16, 2008 at 1:28 pm

I have been paying taxes since you were breastfeeding and I know exactly what i am talking about. Bottom line is, taxing people at a higher percentage as their income goes up is REGRESSIVE (and yes I do know that the higher tax rates apply only to the income above a certain level).. geez..
and “We” is everyone you despise, successful, “rich”, middle class, conservative maybe, not a socialist, not a communist, employed, sane, willing to accept that other people may have a different opinion, even plumbers, ambitious, family oriented, anyone who spends less than 5% of their time at starbucks sipping lattes, people who do not own volvos, blue collar workers, white collar workers, heck.. red collar workers, ….ANYONE who actually works for a living.

  • genghishitler  On October 16, 2008 at 1:49 pm

I have been paying taxes since you were breastfeeding . . .

Not likely. I’m pretty damned old myself. 😀

Bottom line is, taxing people at a higher percentage as their income goes up is REGRESSIVE . . .

That’s incorrect as a simple matter of fact, unless you’re using a really idiosyncratic definition of “regressive,” so idiosyncratic that it’s exactly the opposite of the one everyone else uses.

(and yes I do know that the higher tax rates apply only to the income above a certain level) . . .

Good deal. That puts you light years ahead of curve.

and “We” is everyone you despise . . .

Not at all! Other than rich, conservative, plumbers, blue collar and red collar, I fit into every last one of those categories.

  • Stephen  On October 16, 2008 at 3:06 pm

so…it’s not progressive, it’s not regressive… I’m stumped, but then I am part of that core group of stupid conservatives.
I see you continue to attack Joe the plumber or non-plumber, does not matter, as long as we destroy him any way we can…wow, he has the IRS lien on him! Did you ever think there may be 2 sides to that story..?
I have even seen some of your “buddies” today ask that the FBI investigate him! Wow, liberals asking the FBI to investigate someone.
Keep digging, and shame on you..
On the tax thing.. even if one accepts that in his current tax bracket he would benefit from Obama’s “tax-cut” , what the non-plumber is saying, is that he ASPIRES to open a business one day, hopes to earn 4250,000 or more one day, an does not think Obama’s plan is very helpful…that is what Obama will stifle.. the incentive to grow, to improve oneself financially, to encourage people & companies to create jobs.
btw, I am a “flat tax” person, with a significant income where you do not pay taxes. Alsdo remove most deductions which try to dictate how we manage our lives…
anyway, good luck on your blog..just be civil please

  • genghishitler  On October 16, 2008 at 3:18 pm

    so…it’s not progressive, it’s not regressive…

It is progressive. Sorry if I was being unclear.

he has the IRS lien on him!

It’s an Ohio state income tax lien, actually.

Did you ever think there may be 2 sides to that story..?

    Sure. There almost always is.

I have even seen some of your “buddies” today ask that the FBI investigate him!

T’ain’t no buddies of mine! I don’t want a single solitary dollar of public money spent on this clown.

btw, I am a “flat tax” person, with a significant income where you do not pay taxes.

In understand the appeal. I’ve been a flat tax fan myself a time or two over the years.

Alsdo remove most deductions which try to dictate how we manage our lives…

I’m pretty much all the way down with you there. Using taxation as a means of social engineering never much appealed to me.

anyway, good luck on your blog..just be civil please

Can’t make any promises on the civility thing, but I’ll give it a try. Thanks for stopping by, Stephen. You’re welcome back any ol’ time.

  • Clint Lamma  On October 16, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Joe should not even be the focus all the attention, it is Obamas answer to Joes question that everyone should focus on. He wants to “SPREAD THE WEALTH AROUND, I THINK THAT IS GOOD FOR EVERYONE” Good for who? Not for me, I work for what I have. Everyone else should do the same! We used to have a name for Obamas plan, WELFARE!, now it is called a TAXCUT!! The correct term is SOCIALISM.

    • Clint Lambie  On May 14, 2010 at 10:15 pm

you are a full blooded moron! A dipshit beyond recognition. U hate obama because he is black, that makes u a racist piggy. You and your family are most likely from the south when slaves were not free..you overly conservative idiot!! lol what a dumba$$ u are! die stupid lowlife!

    Thanks for this post.

If Obama is elected, we won’t have jobs to pay taxes!
    THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
If Barack Obama applied for a job with either the FBI or the Secret Service, he would be disqualified because of his past association with William Ayers, a known terrorist.
If he is elected President, he would not qualify to be his own body guard!

    • Clint Lambie  On May 14, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Dumbshit- bush fuked your job!!! u are really fuking dumb! stupid hick!

  • david  On October 17, 2008 at 4:57 am

genghishitler – WOW! Now I know a DEM…First off Joe told Obama he plans to buy the business. Second – working for a company as a plumber he does not require the license. Third – How many people owe someone these days after the past 3 years….Oh, I forgot – the 95% of the people expect to get paid for doing nothing….I know it is only 42% or thereabout that do not actually pay any taxes, but the funny part – Joe was just an average person asking a simple question and his hopes and dreams…look at how you all respond because OBAMA made a gaff about Spreading the wealth. Even T Boone Pickens just said last night on FOX… TO raise taxes anywhere and on anyone is a huge mistake…Oh, I am sure you are all going to now claim He is an idiot…. If Mickey mouse was runny for President on the DEM ticket you would vote for him…oooops – I forgot – he is only registered to vote in FL…www.obamacrimes.com…

    • Clint Lambie  On May 14, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Yea its ok he owes 1 million in taxes…repukes will just bail him out anyway!

  • Clutch  On October 17, 2008 at 5:36 am

    Let’s really recap:

Joe the GOP plant tries to Gotcha Obama. Obama responds carefully, courteously, honestly, and in detail — and gives good reason for Joe to think he’d be better off under Obama’s plan.

It follows that we can’t talk about Bill Ayers and that genghis hitler is a latte-sipping unemployed communist.

I think I missed the middle bit.

Anyhow, notwithstanding the complete collapse of civilization that it would entail, I’m tempted to wish for Clint Lamma to get his wish: that he possess only that which he has through his own labor — no direct or indirect products of taxation and disbursement. I rather suspect that his grim and hopeless squalor would be blamed on someone else no matter what, though.

  • genghishitler  On October 17, 2008 at 9:31 am

Dang! It’s been the busiest night and early morning in this blog’s history. Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment.

    —–

    Clint,

Joe should not even be the focus all the attention, it is Obamas answer to Joes question that everyone should focus on.

Hear, hear! Never mind Samuel the Non-Plumber. Please, PLEASE focus your attention on Obama’s answer. It’s superb. You’ll find the whole thing in the first video linked above.

    —–

    Aileen,

Thanks for the kind words, and for linking to this entry on your blog.

    —–

    Chele,

If Obama is elected, we won’t have jobs to pay taxes!

Really? None of us?! Well, maybe so. According to John McCain, American companies would be better off in Ireland. Perhaps Samuel the Non-Plumber should set up shop there.

If Barack Obama applied for a job with either the FBI or the Secret Service, he would be disqualified because of his past association with William Ayers, a known terrorist.

Oh, my. Where do y’all come up with this nonsense?

    —–

    David,

First off Joe told Obama he plans to buy the business.

Yes, exactly as I reported in the above entry.

Second – working for a company as a plumber he does not require the license.

That’s incorrect as simple matter of fact. You need your own license to do plumbing work lawfully, at least in Ohio.

Third – How many people owe someone these days after the past 3 years….

More to the point, how many people inject themselves this deeply into a presidential campaign for the purpose of whining about taxation, while at the same time lacking the moral authority that comes with being paid-up taxpayers themselves? Only one, so far as I know: Samuel the Non-Plumber.

Even T Boone Pickens just said last night on FOX… TO raise taxes anywhere and on anyone is a huge mistake…Oh, I am sure you are all going to now claim He is an idiot….

Oh no, I’m not going to claim that T. Boone Pickens is an idiot. He strikes me as an extraordinarily bright and talented businessman. But he was also the money behind the 2004 Swiftboat campaign, which means that his credibility leaves something to be desired.

And if Mr. Pickens believes what he says, he ought to have a long talk with John McCain, who’s looking to impose what may well be the biggest middle class tax increase of all time.

    —–

    Clutch,

genghis hitler is a latte-sipping unemployed communist.

You goddamn liberals and your purposeful distortions! Now I know how Samuel the Non-Plumber must feel. I never said that I AM a latte-sipping unemployed communist. I said that someday I hope to BUY a latte-sipping unemployed communist. Jeez.

  • genghishitler  On October 17, 2008 at 12:17 pm

    Me too.

  • TS  On October 18, 2008 at 5:06 am

You seem pretty good at this and even tempered despite the fact (to me) not very much was added to the discourse via response and commentary

  • TS  On October 18, 2008 at 8:31 am

So he has the money to buy a Quarter of a million dollar company but he is not going to buy it because he will pay 3% more in taxes?? He actually will lose out on $250,000 because he will pay maybe $7k more in taxes? When did middle America average JOE make $250,000 in a year!!! He owes back taxes now, his home is ‘modest’ but he can afford a loan to buy this company? AND does the company PROFIT $250,000 or GROSS $250,000??? If the company grosses $250,000 then with all the legal tax deductions his PROFIT is much less and he will receive the OBAMA tax break!! IF the company PROFITS $250,000 then he SHOULD pay more taxes as the company probably grossed over $6 million.

This is starting to smell funny. This guy walks up from nowhere with a specfic question for the contender and then he is referenced exhaustively by the GOP and disreputable media outlets as example and photo op. If it were a thinly veiled ploy (and its starting to look that way), the level of sophistication of Ohio GOP operatives leaves much to be desired, as well as the notion that the constituancy would be unable to access or consume this bit of Theatre of the Absurd and recognize it as such. John needed a Joe Sixpack so Joe the Plummer was created, manufactured, packaged, bought and sold.

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

This is by no means a causal relation, but Joe is a tool, toilet paper in the GOP bathroom as he would allow himself to aggregiously used without being informed. This is the problem: the GOP will chew up and spit out the average Joe Sixpack/Plummer as fodder with a callous disregard due in part to Joe’s own ignorance and lack of sophication. At least Judith Miller and Jeff Gannon were paid.

  • genghishitler  On October 18, 2008 at 5:38 pm

Thanks for your comments, TS. As I understand it, the story that Samuel the Non-Plumber is related to Robert Wurzelbacher looks to be a hoax. You’re quite right in the larger sense, though: this who situation does indeed smell plenty fishy.

  • mike brown  On October 18, 2008 at 10:52 pm

“This guy walks up from nowhere with a specfic question for the contender and then he is referenced exhaustively by the GOP and disreputable media outlets as example and photo op.”

If I recall Sara Palin got ambushed the exact same way all she said was that Mccain would do what had to be done and the media made it sound like she was siding with Obama (why that’s important or news that a vp might have a different opinion is beyond me) Yet here we have joe doing the exact same thing and its all about how joe or non joe is a plant (by the way my fathers middle name is gene and he is called gene by everyone) The point is that obama spoke of “wealth redistribution”.. Bottom line that socialist talk that socialist leanings that socialism bottom line. complain, point fingers dig up dirt on joe do what you want but it was OBAMA that said he wanted to redistribute wealth and “spread it around” if you want socialism vote obama… if not try mccain.

  • Clutch  On October 19, 2008 at 11:34 am

mike brown: “Bottom line that socialist talk that socialist leanings that socialism bottom line.”

    …socialists something socialist.

But seriously. Sorry, I couldn’t figure out how that particular sentence was supposed to inform the reader.

“OBAMA that said he wanted to redistribute wealth and “spread it around” if you want socialism vote obama… if not try mccain.”

Since both Obama and McCain, like every sane American politician in living memory, propose to continue using a progressive tax scheme to redistribute wealth, it’s hard to fathom what your point is. McCain is a somewhat less committed socialist than Obama, maybe?

  • genghishitler  On October 19, 2008 at 5:09 pm

    Thanks for the comment, Mike.

Clutch raises a good, and I think outcome-determinative, point. Neither McCain nor Obama wants to do away with the progressive, marginal income tax system.

Yes, taxation is about redistributing wealth. Always has been, always will be. Kudos to Obama for having the stones to say it. Keep in mind that the wealth gets redistributed to items such as the military. Where do you think we got (and will continue to get) the money for the multi-trillion dollar Iraq debacle that McCain apparently wants to continue indefinitely?

So, then, our choice is between two different brands of “socialism.” [Everyone’s been using that word incorrectly in recent days, and so will I.] Under Obama’s brand anyone making under $250,000 per year gets a tax cut. Under McCain’s brand, everyone who gets health insurance coverage through employment gets a big tax increase. That choice is a no-brainer.

  • Laura  On October 28, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Why is it everyone acts as though Obamathugs are coming to take your pay check and hand it to the crack head on the corner? HE SAID A TAX CUT FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS and that the people making the most money would have to shoulder a bit more. That means if you make over ONE QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR, you may see an increase in your taxes.

And oh, BTW?? Joe the Plumber? A Keating relative. Not something the McCain camp wants out—that he’s still hangin with the homeboys that got him in that little scuffle with the ethics committee. He was a plant from the first—how else were they going to have photographers take pictures of him WATCHING the debate as his name was mentioned OVER AND OVER AND OVER—you know, the thing you do when you are trying to implant propaganda into the minds of the masses?

McCain will finish the job of destroying us that Bush started—Palin wants to not only silence your choices, but also your reading material—McCain’s transition team includes Lobbyists for Saddam Hussein, Freddy Mac and a plethora of scandals. Yeah, you’ll know their names, alright—you’ll know them because they’ll suck the very life out of the planet and call it democracy.

  • Mike the Electrician  On October 29, 2008 at 9:28 am

Obama’s income redistribution plan will work fine. The money will just make it back to the government anyways, in the form of luxury taxes on liquor, cigarettes, and lottery tickets. Now if we can get Medicaid to pay for abortions, we will be on the right track… Abortions are cheaper then 17 yrs of welfare.

  • Confused  On October 30, 2008 at 8:11 am

I am confused. Bush has been in office 8 yrs. Mccain’s “Tax Plan” mirrors Bush’s. The bottom of the economy is falling out and unemployment is sky rocketing… now. Bush is still in office, not Obama, and Obama’s the one with the Tax Plan that will kill jobs? Am i Missing something? Are not jobs killed already? Aint the last 8 years proof that this kind of trickle down economics does not work?… The Obama administration basically seems to be the Clinton administration without a Clinton. All the same people… Compare the economy during the Clinton years to the economy over the past 7 years. This is what I am basing my vote on. My personal life experiences and what seems to be common sense to me.

  • Bob  On November 3, 2008 at 8:47 pm

McCain wants to continue to spread the wealth up to the big businesses and special interests though tax breaks and special deals. I noticed that although Sarah and Todd made $160,000 last year, they are in the 15% bracket. Most people who are et that income level know enough to avoid quite a bit of standard tax rates. Maybe Sarah could advise Joe.

  • Truth  On August 18, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Joe the Plumber is likely a real dumbass.

He likely prefers to be paid in cash to avoid taxes altogether. He likely comes to work at noon nursing a hangover.

  • http://www.lutonlocal.com  On February 18, 2011 at 5:54 am

I agree, I really think it was worked in Obamas favor.
